Blast From The Past - Spoiler Celebration!

Friends.
Dave picked at the grass by his thigh, watching a couple of ants pick their way through the browning blades. The other kids in his third grade class ran and screamed around the field in a haphazard version of I-wasn't-listening-when-you-told-us-the-rules soccer. He imagined that the ants were like the ones in that movie, and wondered what they were talking about. A boy sat down next to him, legs flopping out in the grass in front of him. "What are you in for?" he asked. Dave looked up from Ant Theater, confused. "Whaddaya mean?" he asked, pulling up a fistful of grass. "I mean, why are you sitting on the side today? I forgot my sneakers." He wiggled his toes in his sandals for emphasis. Dave reached into his pocket, and pulled out something tiny and white. "My tooth got knocked out so Mr. Hart said I could sit out." He grinned, poking his tongue through the gap in his teeth. "I'm David." "I know," the boy said. "You sit in front of me in reading." He plucked a blade of grass. "Hey, can you do this?" Wedging the blade between his thumbs, he cupped his hands together and blew hard, creating a sharp whistling noise. Dave gaped, sitting forward, "Hey, how'd you do that?" He scooted a little closer. "First you need a perfect piece of grass, like this one." The boy held his up. "Get one that's sort of wide though. It makes it easier if you're learning." Dave pulled out a piece of grass, looked at it, then tossed it. He pulled another and held it up. "Like this?" "That one's pretty good." The boy nodded, his blond hair flopping over his forehead. He brushed it away impatiently. "Alright, take your grass and stick it between your thumbs, like this," he said, demonstrating. Dave copied the motion, looking over at the other boy expectantly. "Now you just sort of bend your fingers toward each other, and -- " The boy pressed his thumbs against his lips and blew, the whistle sounding again. "But you have to blow through the spot where your thumbs aren't touching." Dave tried it... then tried again. And... again. He frowned, then looked over at the other kid. Then noticed something. "Oh yeeeah. You're that kid Miss B makes sit in the back! ...What happened to your hair?" "Katie paid me twenty dollars to let her do stuff to it," the boy said with a shrug. He plucked a clover leaf from the lawn and spun it between his fingers. "Who's that?" "My babysitter. She watches me when my mom's at yoga." The boy leaned in to murmur conspiratorially, "She's in high school." "Oh yeah?" Dave asked, grinning. He had no idea why that was such a Big Deal, but he wasn't about to say so. "She's got boobies," the boy continued with a grin. "And she wears tank tops." Dave pretended he got the appeal. "That's awesome," he murmured, faking awe. "Yeah," the boy replied, enthusiastically. He pulled up a clump of grass and tossed it into the air next to him, watching some of it get caught by the light breeze. "Hey, do you like Rocket Power?" Okay. That, Dave could get into. "Yeah! Twister's my favorite." "No way, Reggie's way more awesome," the boy replied. "Hey, you should come to my house sometime. My mom can make us brownies and we can watch TV." "Sure! That'd be fun." Dave turned red, embarrassed. "Um, what's your name?" "Joshua Alexander Starshine Rossman," the boy recited. "Most people just call me Josh. I think I might start going by my last name though. It sounds way cooler. Like I'm famous or something." Dave nodded in agreement. "It does," he replied seriously, but kept silent about the other boy's sort of weird middle name. Okay, maybe he snickered a little. "Hey, you wanna sit with me at lunch today?" "Okay," the boy -- Rossman decided with a nod. "You can have some of my pita chips and hummus." "I have a pizza Lunchable. I'll share too... What's hum-iss? It sounds weird." "It's made with garbanzo beans, lemon juice, garlic, tahini, and olive oil. I helped my mom make it. I like it, but I dunno, most kids think it tastes kind of funny." Rossman drew his knees up, wiggling his toes again. "Is your Lunchable organic?" "I... don't know." Dave admitted. He didn't know what any of the stuff Rossman mentioned was. "But they're really good. My mom gets 'em for me all the time." "Okay, we can share," Rossman agreed. "You can have some of my chicken wrap if you want it, too." He looked down at his knees, poking at a grass stain on his jeans. "Hey," he said, looking over at Dave, "Do you play hockey? You should. It's totally awesome." Dave flailed his arms a little. "I LOVE HOCKEY!" he shouted. Mr. Hart glared in their direction and he winced. "My mom said I could try out for it this year at the youth center. Last year I couldn't 'cause my grades were kinda bad, but I've been working real hard this year so..." "Maybe we'll be on the same team this winter!" Rossman exclaimed, but quieter than Dave had. "I played goalie last year, because I couldn't skate that well at the beginning, but I'm better this year, so maybe they'll let me try a different position." "That'd be sooo cooool." Dave agreed. The teacher called everyone off the field, and Dave looked up. "Time to go," he sighed. As he stood up, something occurred to him. "Hey, we should be friends." Rossman got to his feet and dusted grass off his jeans. "Okay," he said. "But you have to sit next to me in reading." { This was, obvs, in celebration of the potential spoiler that was released today. Original preview image is here. Rossman's the blond, but he's naturally brunette and has curly hair. This is not AU. } |

Date: 2011-01-09 04:33 am (UTC)Haha, it totally just happened. We were like, "We should write another 100 watchers bonus!" and then the spoiler happened [look around a little, I'm sure you'll find it if you're interested] and we were like, "We should write a 'yay, spoiler!' bonus!"
So we wound up with a bit of a bonus overload today. :D

and how perfect is it that Rossman's mom is an organic, wild-child hippie?! plus I loved Dave's (pre-English major) imagination with the ants, and his general adorableness.
More blasts from the past would be awesome :D

Date: 2011-01-09 04:34 am (UTC)Now if Rossman had been talking about boys...
how perfect is it that Rossman's mom is an organic, wild-child hippie?!
Right? I have a feeling her efforts in raising a healthy kid will go out the window as soon as he's introduced to Lunchables.

So Rossman introduced Dave to hockey. Sweet!
Dave was totally into hockey before that conversation, but Rossman made him a little more excited about tryouts. :D

Date: 2011-01-09 04:53 am (UTC)And I don't know why but I've totally abandoned the idea that he's that shadow kid in the locker room or with Dave & Az when they slushie the other kids.
Screw that, I do know why: It's that adorable ass picture of the two of them as kids. He's now and forever going to be Ronnie Bass in my head. From Remember the Titans. Long Live

I mean, seriously. Cutest thing you've ever seen, I think.
Perhaps mods have seen it before, but I thought I'd share. It might make picturing this little scene even more fun.
But total Kudos to you on that other picture, for sure. You completely captured Dave and Rossman, and I can't believe you did, but it's uncanny. Wonderful as usual <3

I should hope we captured Rossman perfectly. Since we made him. *gigglefits*

Date: 2011-01-09 09:01 am (UTC)lol, you really are too good for us, this was so cute!
It is more understandable now why Rossman reacted so well to Dave being gay. He was kind of open-minded since the biguinning.
I really loved this. Thanks for writing!

Date: 2011-01-09 12:24 pm (UTC)I love that you did Dave and Rossman (his decision to go by just his last name has totally stuck; us readers have been calling him Rossman ever since you introduced him, even though we know his name is Josh from the start too), instead of Dave and Kurt, which has been done like a bazillion times. It shows just how proud you are of your OC, that you're including him so much in the fic ("fic," lol, this has totally become my canon and I almost don't want to watch the original show when it continues airing :P ) and expanding him as a real in-depth character.
Much ♥ for Rossman and his hippie, organic-food-loving parents. I guess the
